Martin Creed's Work #1370: Chicago (2012) is a limited edition of 200 hand-painted record sleeves containing four new songs on heavyweight vinyl, recorded by the Turner Prize winner and his band as part of a year-long residency at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
Each cover features a unique watercolor artwork by Martin Creed, hand-painted at MCA Chicago earlier this year. The four new songs were recorded all-analog at John McEntire's (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake) unique Soma Studios. Engineered by Bill Skibbe (Franz Ferdinand, The Kills, The Fiery Furnaces) and produced by Andy Knowles (The Nice Nice Boys) 'Chicago' features support singers Dee Alexander and Yvonne Gage, who've worked with The Police, Madonna and R.Kelly.
Work #1370: Chicago (2012) will be released in celebration of the US premiere of Martin Creed's first ballet, taking place at MCA Chicago on November 15 and 16, 2012. For this performance, Creed plays lead guitar with his London-based band, joined by phenomenal dancers from the original Sadler Wells production. Creed's challenge - to compose a work using only the five core positions of classical ballet, each paired with a musical note - creates the conditions for a beguiling collision of rules and spontaneity.
Creed's work has been exhibited widely at a variety of international venues, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Moscow Museum of Modern Art; the Centre Pompidou-Metz, France; Tate Modern, London; and Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
