The Afromuses tea towels were produced for Night and Day (2014), a Chris Ofili exhibition at the New Museum in New York. Afromuses in its entirety presented over 181 watercolors created by Ofili between 1995-2005. None of the works are intended as actual representations of real people. Instead, they are figurative expressions. These figures emerge from Ofili's personal references and impressions of memory, day-to-day life and art history.

The watercolors were digitally printed onto the tea towels preserving the vibrancy of the original colors. With a customized border, these tea towels are intended as a set but are sold individually. They feature digital printing on 100% linen, in an open edition. This tea towel is not only a fun way to dry the dishes, it can also be stretched onto a canvas at your local framer and serve as an affordable artwork for your home.

Chris Ofili was born in Manchester, England, in 1968. He currently lives and works in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He received his BA from the Chelsea School of Art in 1991 and his MA from the Royal College of Art in 1993. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented internationally, including recent shows at the Arts Club of Chicago (2010), Tate Britain, London (2010 and 2005), Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover (2006), and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2005). He represented Britain in the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 and won the Turner Prize in 1998.

The MCA Chicago commissioned Ofili to design an immersive artwork for its restaurant Marisol. The Sorceress’ Mirror can be seen as a reimagining of the landscape in Trinidad, where the artist lives and works. Learn more.
