A pioneer when Graffiti met the formal gallery ecosystem, artist Futura (formerly known as Futura 2000) was known as early as the 1970s for his radical approach in the street, introducing abstraction to what was an entirely letter-based discipline. Born as Leonard Hilton McGurr, his work on canvas caught attention in the 1980s, and established him as a leading voice within a wider art movement that included the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Kenny Scharf. Entirely self-taught in what he calls “the subway school”, Futura has been compared to Wassily Kandinsky for his mastery of color, geometric composition, and lines—and is celebrated alongside his friends Dondi White and Rammellzee for his progressiveness and of-the-moment dynamism. As an artist who also has a dedicated commercial practice and product brand, Futura Laboratories. He has collaborated with partners such as Louis Vuitton, Comme des Garc çons, Chanel, Nike, Off-White and Levi’s. Futura has also designed iconic album packaging for musicians such as The Clash, DJ Krush, and provided performance visuals for Lupe Fiasco and Virgil Abloh.”

Comme des Garçons SHIRT FW20 features three artworks by Futura 2000, remixed by Rei Kawakubo into three distinct prints.

Says Futura himself, “I want to distinguish collaborating with a brand from collaborating with other artists or individuals. It is very generous to collaborate with someone. It's also perhaps a sign of maturity."

Comme des Garçons is the Japanese fashion label founded in 1969 and headed by Rei Kawakubo in Tokyo and Place Vendôme, Paris.
