These works are built using scraps of material from earlier projects, and I think of them as combining the tradition of crazy quilts and pareidolia, the phenomenon of ascribing meaning to visual phenomenon (like seeing figures in the clouds). Ultimately these functioned as a seeking of joy and intuition during an abysmal time. They are named after historical figures with complicated histories of power expressed alternately as frivolity, violence, lasciviousness.

Jessica Campbell is a cartoonist, visual artist and writer who is interested in how combining seemingly disparate media, subject matter and tone can be a tool for research and the production of knowledge. She is the author of three graphic novels, including forthcoming Rave, Hot or Not: 20th Century Male Artists and XTC69. Her comics have appeared in the New Yorker, Hyperallergic and the Nib, among other publications.

Campbell’s work has been exhibited at museums and galleries throughout North America. In addition to upcoming solo shows at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia (Philadelphia, PA) and Western Exhibitions (Chicago, IL), she has had previous solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

All proceeds from the MCA Store support the exhibitions and programs of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
