Help bring light both to your life and to the developing world. Little Sun is a portable, solar-powered light designed by engineer Frederik Ottesen and artist Olafur Eliasson, whose 2009 MCA Chicago exhibition was one of the most popular in our history. It’s an attractive, highly functional light in the shape of a hand-sized sun with a higher purpose: it is distributed worldwide by establishing sustainable trade routes and creating jobs in off-grid communities. Little Sun’s parent organization assists in the creation of off-grid small businesses, supplying them with Little Sun lamps at a reduced rate and providing retailers with the support they need to profit. It saves users 90% over 3 years compared to kerosene.

Little Sun aims to spread light, safe energy, and profits everywhere. All funds generated by Little Sun are used to drive the project. Five hours of sunlight on the 2.25” square, mono-crystalline, 0.4-watt solar panel allows for one evening of LED Little Sunlight. Little Sun is UV and heat resistant as well as dust proof, and runs for about three years before using a battery replacement. And, it’s portable and versatile: wear it as a pendant, carry it as a hand-held lantern, hang it on your wall, fix it as a table lamp, or attach it to your bicycle.

Includes adjustable strap. The Duris E 5 LED from Osram runs at 0.5 watt and emits 40 Lm @ 120 mA (approx. comparable in perception to a 40-watt incandescent light bulb). Includes 3 x 1.2V Ni-MH AAA battery pack with 600 mA.
All proceeds from the MCA Store support the exhibitions and programs of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
