Think of this trivet as something that will not only brighten a dinner table, but also as something that will brighten lives. Striking and colorful enough to enhance a room as a decorative object, yet heat resistant and durable, it’s perfect for hot casserole dishes or even as a coaster for hot coffee or tea pots. But that’s only the beginning of the story.

The Dutch design company Vilt Van Ver (Felt from Far) works with an organization in Nepal that gives Nepalese women the opportunity to be financially independent and receive fair wages under good working conditions. The wool originates in New Zealand and is shipped to Nepal, where it is dyed and eventually arrives in Kathmandu, where it is manufactured into felt. The dyed wool is rolled up into a tight ball. The ball is placed in a bucket with warm water and soap. The water and soap cause felting in the wool fiber. The felt balls are squeezed, rubbed and rolled with a shelf until they have the right size and shape. Since the balls are full of water, they are dried in a centrifuge.

In Kathmandu, the centrifuge is cranked by hand every day because of the frequent electrical blackouts. After centrifugation, the balls are placed on the roof of the workplace where they can further dry under the Nepalese sun. Once the balls are completely dry, they are strung together to form a trivet. The entire process is very time-consuming but results in each handmade trivet being beautiful and unique.
